In modern society, the semiconductor chip is one of the most important resources to run the industry and our daily life. Smartphones, cars, refrigerators, and other daily items require semiconductor chips. Also, factories and power plants that generate electricity need semiconductor chips either.
However, currently, semiconductor chips are not enough and industries are suffering the semiconductor chips shortage.
GM lost 2 million dollars because of the semiconductor shortage.
Biden tries to solve this problem too because of its urgency.
Then, how bad exactly the semiconductor shortage and how to fix it?
First, we should know what is the semiconductor chip.
The semiconductor chip is an integrated circuit with transistors inside.
The semiconductor industry consists of three parts, Fabless, Foundry, and IDM.
Fabless is a business that only designs the circuit, not manufacturing. On the other hand, a Foundry business is a business that only manufactures the semiconductor chips, not design. IDM is a business that does both. But, currently losing its competitiveness.
The U.S.A has 47% of the semiconductor sales because of the Fabless industry, but only has 12% of the semiconductor manufacturing because of lack of Foundry business.
Since Covid19 outbreaks ruined the world's supply chain, the semiconductor chip shortage got worsened. However, the requirement for semiconductor chips is getting higher. In 2019, the semiconductor business is about 412.3 billion dollars, but in 2020, it increased to 439 billion dollars. About 8.3% had increased. And it is expected to be required more since cars and other daily products need it more.
China is focusing its power on getting more semiconductors. Since Beijing thinks it is the top priority, China is investing trillions of dollars and try to manufacture at least 70% of the semiconductors made in China.
In my opinion, the semiconductor chip is an important resource. But, I believe that there will be alternatives sooner or later since human civilization is in advance rapidly.
