European Union is trying to regulate big techs such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon.
There are several reasons why the EU is trying to regulate big techs.
First, big techs don't pay tax by circumventing the laws of the EU and the respective countries of the EU. For example, according to the video, Apple's head office is in Ireland and didn't pay about 13 billion dollars to the EU by using the law of the relation between EU and Ireland.
According to the narrator in the video, current laws of the EU and respective countries consisting the EU didn't make their law considering the digital world. Therefore, she insisted that the EU and countries consisting the EU need to update their law to protect their digital sovereignty.
Then, why now?
Since the tyranny of the big techs is highlighted through many mediums, people started to feel regulation to control those big techs.
The EU tries to make regulations in two different laws.
The first one is the digital service act. It regulates big techs to not show abusing contents to people and make sets of rules of using artificial intelligence.
Another one is the digital marketing act. It regulates big techs to stop monopolizing through their monopolistic status. For example, if Apple pushes their own apps on the top of the App market controlled by Apple, this regulation stops this act.
Also, the EU tries to demand other things with GDPR which stands for General Data Protect Regulation. It demands big techs to regularly submit reports and open their sensitive algorithms like ads algorithms.
Of course, big techs don't like these regulations and trying to stop them. But, the narrator in the video says that these regulations will pass the council even though they can be changed a little.
