These days, the violence of the police and army for citizens is getting stronger and stronger in Myanmar. Police and the army are now using real guns instead of rubber guns, water cannons, and tear gas. The junta seems to continue using their ammunition to maintain their status in the country. To fight back, citizens are having protests on the street and strikes from their workplaces. For example, most of the countries' 2000 private banks' branches shut down since February 8th.
There are other economic distresses for the junta and the country too. For instance, kyat's value had depreciated at least 6.5% against the dollar. This will cause Myanmar to import food and other products from other countries. It will cause dissatisfaction of most of the citizens and may decrease the approval rate for the junta. Also, those economic damages and social disobedience will cause generals who rule the junta to lose their ability to pay their soldiers. Which weaken their power of control.
However, even though those actions that strike the junta is quite effective, it will also damage the economy of the normal citizens. Merchandisers and entrepreneurs will have to handle their losses when trading with foreign countries. Also, normal citizens lose their job or can't work even though they have their jobs. Furthermore, due to the long period of the junta's rule, average people seem to not accumulated much money and resources to keep their social obedience long.
Even though, according to the article, many people are still participating the social obedience and their number is even growing more and more.
About the current situation in Myanmar, I suppose that even though people are fighting hard and many countries on the western side are willing to help, the junta will likely win the battle.
First, the junta and the army have most of the resources of Myanmar. It means that they can maintain their power and unity much more than the civilian side.
Second, even though many civilians are angry and try to break down the junta, they are not united. Many people's interests must be different and it's very hard to unite those wills. I think people will start to quit their social obedience from someone who is poor since they will run out of resources and money to hold their family soon.
Finally, the UN and other western side countries won't help Myanmar with the army since they have lessons from Iraq and the middle east. Having a war means that participants have to spend a lot of money and life continuously for a long time. Also, there are Russia and China who advocate the junta and authoritarianism.
But, even though civilians lose their fight, someday they will win. This fight is never meaningless since people would know the injustice of the junta and authoritarianism.
When the situation changes, I believe they will win.
Thank you.
