This week's topic is about the Chinese oppression of Xinjiang Uyghur and why boycotting cotton from Xinjiang is hard to do.
Xinjiang is the place where located in the Northwest part of China, the biggest autonomous region of the country.
Xinjiang is one of the most strategically important places in China since it is the linchpin of the belt and road initiative. Also, there are a lot of resources including oil and rare metals. Because of those reasons, the Chinese government tried to move Chinese Han into Xinjiang to replace the natives like Uyghurs. Due to China's policy towards Xinjiang and Uyghurs, the Uyghurian population of Xinjiang dropped down to 45.8% compared to 75% fifty years ago. On the other hand, Chinese Han increased from 6% to 40.5% of the Xinjiang population.
Due to the importance of the Xinjiang province, China will not ease its dominance over this place.
According to the video, by using their dominance over Xinjiang, the Chinese government enforces Uyghurians to work at the cotton farm to make a profit. About 20% of the world's cotton production is from Xinjiang.
Since the labor of the Uyghurians is by compulsion, it against the UN Charter and human rights laws of many countries. Therefore, U.S sanctioned Chinese individuals who are related to this enforced labor in the Xinjiang region 2020.
However, China claims that Xinjiang became better since its reign. They claim that terror rates have been dropped about 6.1% and the income rate has been increased about 5.8% by their governance. Furthermore, they claim what international human right organization and U.S are fabricating the truth.
According to the video, the Australian government figured out that about 82 brands in the region are benefited from enforced labor in Xinjiang. Also, some famous brands like Zara, PBH which have famous brands like Calvin-Klein and Tommy Hilfiger as their subsidiary are using cotton from Xinjiang too.
Video also mentioned that it is hard to sanction all of these brands because it is very hard to trace the distribution. Furthermore, it is hard to sanction raw material too because that countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh use Chinese cotton too.
Also, the video claims that many companies in China will not likely leave China even though they have not belonged to China. There are two reasons for this.
The first one is that the infrastructure in China is very good compare to the other countries with the cheap labor cost. That is the reason that many companies can't leave China even though labor costs became much higher than other developing countries nearby.
Second, the cluster of industries in China makes it hard for the companies to leave the region. By belonging to the cluster, companies can get information and goods much more compared to those not belong to the cluster.
At last, even though it is hard to regulate the trade, it is possible. The video insists that we already have enough technology like blockchain, QR code, and others.
So, it is a matter of choice, not technology.
In my opinion, if it's possible to regulate the industry and trace the products, make it more popular and advertise the situation more actively.
For example, let companies use blockchain and QR code to detect whether it's from Xinjiang or not.
Therefore, let the work done by the civilian, not the government.
Thanks.
