The lecture mainly deals with the current situations of migrants. And also their working condition in migrated countries, usually the developed countries.
In the lecture, the speaker said that about 5% of the workers in the developed countries are migrated workers who don't have citizenship. And about 67.4% of the migrants are working in developed countries. That means only 32.6% are working in undeveloped countries. That means most of the people want to work in developed countries even though how far and different from migrants' homeland.
According to the lecture, the reason why this happens is that people from undeveloped countries want to be well-paid and developed countries want cheap labor. It seems quite sensible. Some countries depend even much higher than the average. For example, Qatar depends on 95% of its labor to migrants.
The interviewer said there are a lot of problems due to their status. Basic insurance, injustice on their working and etc. This caused a lack of social distancing during the Covid19 pandemic too.
As seen, the number of migrants and their labor in the developed countries are quite copious and the problems belonging to its condition are unavoidable either.
My opinion of how to solve this situation is to invest and have more attention to developing smart factories and machine automation. There are several reasons why.
The first reason is that since it is very hard to solve the problem of the miserable condition of the migrant worker. Since the developed countries want cheap labor, I think that the employer and the government do not want to invest and take care of migrant workers since it cost money. Of course, if they're a skilled worker or Intelli, companies and the government might spend some effort on their working condition due to their scarcity but many portions of the migrant workers are not. But, it is too cruel to make people work in such harsh conditions. Since we have to achieve both purposes, cheap labor and good working condition, investing and developing robots would be the best choice.
The second reason is that since current supply chain of the world is quite diverse. Since modern society depends heavily on other countries, being stuck in a bottleneck of the supply might cause severe supply damage in many parts of the industries and society. And Covid19 had proven it by limited migration and flow of the labor cross country to country. This might happen again by political turbulence or economical destabilization. Therefore, to make the labor and supply chain stable, I think investing in and upgrading the smart factory and machine automation will be the best option.
The final reason is that smart factoring and machine automation is improving rapidly. I saw an article that one smart factory can produce almost a billion eggs annually. Also, one manager can take care of about 170,000 breeding chickens alone. Since the memory and operating chip prices keep going under, the price of building such smart factories and machine automation will also keep going down. This will eventually induce the competition of the countries that are developing faster on the smart factories and machine automation. Therefore, I think investing more and earlier will be quite helpful for maintaining or increasing our competitiveness.
In conclusion, of course, we should make the migrants' working conditions better since it helps to save the human's common and natural rights. But, it might collide with the supply and demand law either. Therefore, to solve that problem and also to cope with the current situation, machine automation and making smart factories are required.
Thanks.
